CHAPTER 17
BLAISE
Today we say goodbye to Richard Hale. A man of few words, but he didnât need them. His stance and the expressions he wore said them all. He was not a good man. I learned this when I was six and saw my momâs first black eye. As the years went on, new bruises appeared and new cries rang into my bedroom at night.
It was all confirmed when I thought Richard and Penny were sleeping together. The day I took her diary, I wanted to learn the truth. Lilith found it in the back of my car and she shared the secrets inside with the entire school. It was never supposed to happen.
But, then I knew. Penny didnât do anything wrong. It was all him.
His precious little angel, who we all thought he looked at as a loving daughter. Instead, he looked at her as an untouched girl in her transition to womanhood. He was turned on by the fact that she was a young virgin and heâd stand over her bed at night, watching her and jerking off to the sleeping beauty.
A lion ready to attack and take her innocence. Iâd die before I let that happen. I got in his good graces. I was the obedient son. One who did what he asked while plotting for my own future. Take everything he owns. Penny and I were deserving of it. Not my bitch of a stepmother. We were the ones who endured years of disgrace. And one day, when I find my mom, Iâll share it with her as well. And I will find her. One day.
Penny joins me in the kitchen, wearing a black, long-sleeved cotton dress that sits just below her knees and a pair of black flats. Her hair is all down. Her eyes are tear-soaked with bags beneath them. Her despair is obvious. And it should be after everything sheâs been through.
All the hell Iâve put her through, yet, she still looks at me like Iâm her savior. I donât deserve it, but I certainly wonât deny her. I could never deny her.
âPenny,â I scream at the top of my lungs as I run up to the blazing barn. Fear ripples through me like a strong current, ready to throw me off the deep end.
Lilith runs toward me frantically. âWe didnât do it. I swear. It was just a stupid prank. I donât know howââ
âShut the fuck up.â She better be okay. She has to be. âIf anything happens to her, I swear to God I will burn every one of your fucking houses down.â
Sirens sound in the distance and my entire body goes numb as I bust through the door of the barn. âPenny! Answer me!â My shirt gets snagged on a piece of wood, and I jerk back, ripping the fabric. Waving my hands in front of me, I make my way through the cloud of smoke.
Shit. I gasp when a large beam falls directly in front of me, missing me by mere inches.
